Denmark helps Ugandans get the most bang for the buck

Transparent and accountable management of public finances is essential if Uganda is to achieve its development goals. Recently, the Embassy participated in a visit to Jinja District and Jinja Municipality to assess their implementation of the national integrated financial management system, based on modern IT solutions. The visit indicated that in Jinja, implementation is on track and has led to significant improvements in terms of transparency, accountability, budget discipline and fewer remarks from auditors. While challenges remain, there is no doubt that modern financial management systems are changing Uganda for the better - and contribute to Uganda getting the most out of Danish budget support to the water and sanitation sector.

Denmark currently supports the Financial Management and Accountability Programme (FINMAP III) with DKK 14 million and the water and sanitation sector with DKK 450 million.


Given the often irregular power supply, generators are installed together with the new financial IT system to secure continuous operation.


The server for the software is kept in a locked, air-conditioned room, and connected to central government servers to allow for real-time exchange of financial data.
